July 17, 2016: At least three police officers were shot dead in Baton Rouge on Sunday morning as they were responding to a call about a man with a gun.
The incident is the nation’s fourth high-profile deadly encounter involving police in the last two weeks.
A man identified as Gavin Long, Kansas City, went on a shooting rampage on what was his 29th birthday. Long was a former Marine who was discharged in 2010 after five years of military service, including a year in Iraq.

July 5, 2016: Alton Sterling, 37, was selling CDs outside the Triple S Food Mart in Baton Rouge when a homeless man approached him and asked for money.
When the homeless man wouldn't go away, Sterling showed him his gun, a source said. The homeless man then used his cell phone to call 911.
Sterling was shot by police after an encounter with two police officers who answered the 911 call. The officers can be seen on video on top of Sterling before shots were fired.

A graphic cell phone video of Sterling being shot by police was shared on social media, which caused local protests and drew national attention.
July 6, 2016: Philando Castile was shot dead by a police officer in Minnesota.

On the evening of July 6, Castile was pulled over by police.
Officer Yanez approached the vehicle, and at some point discharged his weapon, striking Castile multiple times.
Also in the car was his fiance and her four year old daughter.
She said her fiance told the police officer that he had a firearm and was reaching for his wallet for his permit when he was shot.
Castile died at 9:37 p.m. in the emergency room of the Hennepin County Medical Center, about 20 minutes after being shot.
July 7, 2016: These shootings set into motion a chain of events in which a Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas turned into a massacre.

A sniper, identified as Micah Xavier Johnson, 25, of Mesquite, Texas, killed five police officers and injured another seven.
Johnson had no criminal record or known terror ties, a law enforcement official said. He was a military veteran who'd served in Afghanistan.
A total of 11 officers were shot at the protest against police brutality.
It was the deadliest incident for law enforcement in the US since 9/11.
Two civilians were also injured.

Police said Johnson told hostage negotiators that he was angry about the recent fatal shootings of black men by police elsewhere in the US.
He was killed when a Dallas police bomb squad robot killed him after negotiations failed.
Protests and vigils have been held across the US as racial tensions escalate.
