Book Review: Slightly South Of Simple

Three grown daughters from different walks of life go home to Peachtree Bluff, Georgia to stay with their mother.

The oldest daughter, Caroline, is pregnant with her second child. Her husband has infamously humiliated her within her social realm in New York City by being on a reality show with a super model he thinks he's in love with. She is facing divorce and single motherhood.

The middle daughter, Sloane, has two young boys and a husband in the military. He has just taken off for another tour of duty overseas, and she is a bit scared and lonely.

The youngest daughter, Emerson, is a budding actress and is coming home to film her latest film.

Their mother, Ansley, has her own life and concerns, but pushes that all aside to be front and center for her daughters and grandchildren.

Then her mother is ailing and she ends up bringing her home to roost as well.

Kristy Woodson Harvey is a relatively new voice in Southern women's fiction. Being a Southern girl herself, she has the dialect and euphemisms, as well as the traditions, down to a science. They are the core of her female characters.

She writes about strong women who march to the beat of their very own drums. And there is always a little romance involved to keeps the characters in a state of ambivalence .

Kristy Woodson Harvey writes about the bonds between women. The blood-is-thicker-than-water relationships that exist between daughters and mothers and grandmothers.

She inserts Southern drama and subtle hints to unearthed secrets that keep you reading till the very end.

I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

Kristy Woodson Harvey is the bestselling author of Dear Carolina (Berkley/Penguin Random House, 2015), Lies and Other Acts of Love (Berkley/Penguin Random House, 2016) and the forthcoming Peachtree Bluff Series, beginning with Slightly South of Simple (Gallery/Simon & Schuster, 2017).

Dear Carolina was long-listed for the Pat Conroy Southern Book Prize, has been optioned for film and has appeared on numerous “must-read” lists.

Lies and Other Acts of Love was a Romantic Times top pick, a Southern Booksellers Okra Pick and was chosen to be a part of the 2017 Trio display, an integration of story, art and song, which will spend the year traveling the country.
