6 Ways to Elegantly Mix Vintage with Modern Décor

Life is all about finding balance. And, while this certainly applies to, say, your work-to-real-life ratio, your bank account and your healthy meal plan, it also comes into play as you decorate your home.

This is especially true if you dream of bringing together two different décor styles under one roof or even within one room.

Many homeowners hope to strike up the perfect balance between quirky, one-of-a-kind vintage pieces and sleek modern elements.

Seems impossible, but remember that one little keyword: balance. The following six tips make that middle ground easier to find.

1. De-pair and Re-pair: Think of two things that typically go together: side table and lamp, sofa and coffee table, chairs and table, desk and chair… The list certainly can go on. Rather than having a set that matches perfectly, remove one element and replace it with another.

So, for example, slide a set of modern chairs under your vintage dining table and voila: your room has a bit of freshness to go with the old-school vintage charm.

2. Just a Dab Will Do: In a very modern space, you only need a touch of vintage character and flair to make a huge statement — everything around it will be crisp and clean, after all.

There are so many ways to do this. First, check out the bones of your house. Do you already have a vintage back splash or a bit of exposed brick to serve as the backdrop of your kitchen?

If so, you’re set: just add sleek, shiny counter tops and fixtures to really bring out the character of the space.

Of course, not everyone is lucky enough to have a home with built-in design features. In this case, you have an excuse to shop around for eye-catching art and accessories to add a bit of spunk to your modern home.

Check out yard sales, flea markets and online exchanges to find the perfect piece of vintage flair.

3. Don’t Confine Your Pieces to One Room: Imagine you have a vintage bedroom set. You could keep all of the pieces in your bedroom, of course, but you could also have a little bit of fun with versatile pieces, like the wardrobe.

A vintage wardrobe can double as a television cabinet, bar or dining room storage unit. The amount of space inside provides you with plenty of opportunity to be creative and come up with a second use for it.

The same goes for any staple piece of vintage or modern furniture that you have: how can you repurpose it in another space for added style and function?

4. Keep the Colors Simple: Here’s an easy way for any design newbie to dabble in the field for the first time: keep the colors light and simple.

With experience, you’ll know how to work the color wheel and choose complimentary colors. But for now, keep your palette light and simple to ensure that all of your vintage and modern elements go together.

If you’re feeling a bit lost without your pop of color, then keep simple:
a pop. You should take the opportunity to select a quirky piece of vintage furniture to highlight against an otherwise neutral backdrop.

5. Don’t Forget the Floor: We focus so much of our attention on furniture, paint colors and wall art that we almost forget that our floors present a design opportunity, too.

Rolling out an incredible vintage rug will make just about any room feel warmer, put-together and interesting.

Its effects will be amplified even more if it’s paired with modern furniture. An antique rug can soften the lines of your modern pieces and therefore, bring all of the elements of the room together.

6. Make a Display: There’s only one thing worse than keeping your vintage collections stored away somewhere, and that’s leaving it on a shelf and creating clutter.

Instead, hang your favorite albums, images, textiles, magazine ads — whatever! — and you’ll instantly have a focal point for your room that brings the vintage element you’re looking for.

Successfully blending vintage and modern means you’ve found the perfect middle ground between what’s old and what’s new.

And, once you stake out that ground and create the balance you seek, you’ll know you have created a room that’s entirely you — there’s no better feeling as a designer than that.
