10 Tips To Get You Through Scary Times

It's been a rough week in America and around the world. The stress can make you literally sick.

So I'm committed to switching things up and doing more to feel better.

Some things I want to personally work at...

1. Eat a better and balanced diet.

I have not been eating like I should. I know it and I do better for a time, then I slide right back to where I was. I've got to do better.

My health demands that I take better care of myself.

2. Write down your thoughts

Everyone says how positive it is to write things down in a journal. Sometimes it just helps to focus on your thoughts and write down your concerns.

Writing is, for me, cathartic.

3. Get off social media

Oh, the negativity on the internet. There are positive things there as well. But much of the time, the negative stuff spills out and spreads like a virus.

4. Turn off the TV

Sometimes you just have to get away from things. The harmful rhetoric and scary talk of violence and possible war on TV drains me.

If something drastic happens, your watching the coverage on TV isn't going to help anyone. Take a break from the news and go outside or work in your garden.

5. Lose yourself in a good book

I know when I lose myself in a well-plotted book, the world fades away for a time.

Go to your local library or dig in your book shelf for a book you've been meaning to read.

6. Treat yourself to a wonderful day out & about

Sometimes I find great pleasure in planning a fun day for myself. I might go get lunch,  and then stroll around my favorite antique mall.

I don't have to buy anything. Just looking at other people's creativity stimulates my own.

7. Go out into nature

Mother Nature can heal a lot of wounds. Smell the flowers. Watch the hummingbirds dart from plant to plant.

Plant healing herbs indoors or outdoors. The scent of herbs, strong and fragrant, can divert your attention to more positive thoughts.

8. Start a new craft or DIY project

I find it fun to start something new. It might be something I've been mulling over doing, or something I decide to do on a lark.

Switch the furniture around. Paint a room or piece of furniture.

9. Frame family photos

Now is a good time to switch out your framed photos. Or go through a pile of photos you've been meaning to get to, and frame those.

Passing by a table with a photo of someone you love will give you strength and certainly it will make you smile.

10. Have lunch with someone you love

Call someone, a friend or family member, and ask them out to lunch or even coffee. The abrupt departure of doing something different will re-energize you.

Spending time with someone you care about will change your focus.

A few other random thoughts...

Petting the pupsters makes me smile. It is well known that petting an animal lowers your blood pressure.

Sit outside or at a window and write down the kind of birds you see in your yard.

Take a long walk. Or take your dog for a walk.

These are scary times. It's hard to avoid what's going on. But you likely can't change anything about it. You merely react to it.

Take care of yourself. You deserve it.
